Foster family

No foster homes,
no rescues.

Becoming a temporary foster family for an abandoned rabbit is a true gift of self that saves lives and lets the shelter take in rabbits in need, or even in danger.

Why

A second chance, at your place.

Foster families are essential: they let us pursue our mission. It’s also a great opportunity to live with a rabbit before committing long term.

The minimum commitment is 2 months (or less if the rabbit is adopted sooner). You can keep them longer if you wish, and foster families always get first choice for adoption.

Thanks to you, our rabbits live in a family setting instead of a cage for long periods without stimulation.

How it works

What each side brings.

We ask the foster family

  • Provide a suitable living space: cuddles, human contact, activities and toys to keep them stimulated.
  • Provide pellets and wood-pellet litter, to be purchased at the shop when picking up the rabbit.
  • Give fresh vegetables daily and hay in abundance (hay supplied by the shelter).
  • Pick up the rabbit and bring them back to the shelter once adopted.

The ALSA shelter provides

  • Veterinary care authorized by the shelter.
  • A carrier for transport.
  • A pen for their home.
  • Accessories: litter box, water bottle, bowls, etc.
  • Starter hay and pellets.

Commitments

Obligations toward the shelter.

  1. The rabbit must be semi-free or have at least 3 hours of freedom outside the pen each day.
  2. Contact us immediately if you notice a change in behaviour or health.
  3. Veterinary care is covered only when coordinated and approved by the shelter with its veterinarian. Visits to a veterinarian chosen by the foster family are not reimbursed.
  4. Reply to volunteers’ emails so we can follow up on the rabbit.
  5. Paint an accurate portrait of their character and send us nice photos to help their adoption.
  6. The shelter handles emergencies and doesn’t choose which rabbits it rescues. We do respect your preferences (sick rabbit, pregnant doe…) whenever possible.
  7. Pay the adoption fees if you decide to adopt, or bring them back to the shelter after the minimum 2-month period.

Before finalizing an adoption, the family will need to show us photos of the future home.
